Here is some information about the IELTS Writing tasks that you might find helpful:

The IELTS Writing section is comprised of one Task One and one Task Two essay.  Both essays are grouped together into one Writing evaluation, which is scored in whole bands, 1 (lowest) to 9 (highest).  Academic and General Writing tasks are different, as follows:

Academic

Task One

  • essays must be at least 150 words in length
  • you should spend around 20 minutes on a Task One essay
  • Task One questions include pie charts, line graphs, bar graphs, tables, process diagrams, flowcharts, or a combination of two of the above
  • Task One essays should report the data or information provided and does not require your opinion or interpretation

On TheEnglishLink.com, the Task One questions are grouped by question type, so you can choose to take tests with pie chart questions if you want to practice improving your essays in this specific area, or process diagrams if you feel you need to improve the skills necessary to master this type of question.

Task Two

  • essays must be at least 250 words in length
  • you should spend around 40 minutes on a Task Two essay
  • Task Two questions require you to form an argument on a given topic.  You may be asked to give your opinion, explain both sides of an issue, agree or disagree with a statement, describe the pros and cons or advantages and disadvantages of an issue, compare and contrast elements of a topic, and many others.

On TheEnglishLink.com, the Task Two question area is divided into

topic areas like Competition versus Cooperation, Genetic Engineering

and Global Warming, among many others.  We have chosen topics used

in past IELTS examinations to help you prepare for successful results.

General

Task One

The General Task One essay is a letter.  You are given a scenario to write about, like a letter to a restaurant where you were dissatisfied with the service, or a letter to your landlord asking him for an extended lease.  It is important to write using the correct tone; for example, is the letter formal, informal or semi-formal?  You must also answer all points addressed in the test question.

You have 20 minutes to write a General Task One essay, and you must write at least 150 words.

Task Two

General Task Two Writing questions are similar to the academic questions, but require slightly less analysis.

You have 40 minutes to write a General Task Two essay, and you must write at least 250 words.

You will be given 60 minutes to complete both essays and it is up to you to manage your time appropriately to complete both essays.  We recommend you write your Task Two essay first, since it carries more weight in the scoring of the test.
